The Saints have beaten Carlo Ancelotti's side 2-0 at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton took the lead in the 27th minute when James Ward-Prowse played a neat one-two with Danny Ings, who provided the through ball for his fellow Englishman to fire a shot past Jordan Pickford.

Ings turned provider again eight minutes later when he crossed from the left flank to find Che Adams at the far post and the unmarked striker took his time to pick his spot to beat Pickford with a strike that deflected off Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The forward’s double followed a close-range volley from Eddie Nketiah as Arsenal fended off an Everton side who lost for just the second time in the league under Carlo Ancelotti.

Everton stunned Emirates Stadium with a first-minute opener from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and also scored through Richarlison in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

But they were rocked by Aubameyang putting Arsenal back in front just 24 seconds into the second half, and despite a heartening return to action for Andre Gomes, the Toffees finished without reward.

Top of the Premier League and through to the last 16 of the Champions League, Liverpool appeared to be prioritising their other commitments until Jones came to the fore.

Jurgen Klopp included new signing Takumi Minamino among a clutch of established names at Anfield but largely put his faith in young stars, who held their own admirably against an experienced Everton outfit.

Scintillating Spurs are now just two points behind second-placed Manchester City and trail Liverpool by six but after this performance, the London club look well capable of pushing their rivals all the way.

"Everybody's been talking about Liverpool and Manchester City, and we've been getting on with it and doing well, like we normally do," said Kane.

"We've had a good month and hopefully we can take that into January now - and February - and we'll see where we're at come April time."

Ronald Koeman's 16-month stint in charge of Everton was brought to a halt on Monday, following a humiliating 5-2 home defeat to Arsenal that left them 18th in Premier League.

However, a rejuvenated second-half display showed Everton's quality - with a moment of magic from Willian in the 92nd minute ensuring that Dominic Calvert-Lewin's effort soon after was a mere consolation.

The home side fell behind early on when Nabil Fekir slotted home a penalty following a rash challenge by Mason Holgate.

However, Ronald Koeman's side drew level after 69 minutes when Ashley Williams powered home a header, only for Bertrand Traore's deft backheel to hand Lyon the win six minutes later.

As a result, Everton have now taken just one point from their opening three Group E games and sit bottom of the table.

Antonio Conte's side suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to Burnley at home on the opening day of the season and their victory over Tottenham at Wembley last time out owed much to doggedness and some timely slices of luck.

But the Blues preyed mercilessly upon an Everton side who showed signs of the toll trips to Manchester City and Hajduk Split this week had taken.

Fabregas was one of the villains against Burnley as he was sent off, but orchestrated his opening goal before the half hour.

Rooney played the full 90 minutes, but struggled to find space up front before dropping into a deeper role following the introduction of Sandro Ramirez in the second half.

Leighton Baines came up with a deflected winner to give Everton a slim advantage ahead of next week's second leg in the third round of qualifying and Rooney is ready to move on after his second debut at Goodison Park.

"Great day obviously, I've been looking forward to it and I'm pleased we got the win in a tough game," Rooney said to ITV. 

The former Manchester United captain has returned to Merseyside after 13 years with United and still feels he has a lot to offer at the age of 31.

Rooney revealed he had other options but a move back to Everton was the only one that interested him once manager Ronald Koeman made his interest clear.

"I always play like I have got a point to prove," Rooney said at his presentation on Monday. "I'm not coming into a retirement home. I want to play, I want to win. It is a challenge I need at this point in my career.

Rooney returns to Goodison Park not as the world beater he promised to be after breaking into the Everton team aged 16 and emphatically announcing himself as one of England's most exciting young talents with a screamer against Arsenal, but as a player who has lost his way and endured a sustained decline over the past three seasons.
