EU-STREIT PNG Support sustainable Cocoa Business Project

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations under the EU-STREIT PNG Programme, are supporting this initiative by Wosera High School, in engaging students and surrounding communities in sustainable cocoa value chain development.

Following appraisal visits and business plan review, the Programme supported the school’s newly initiated cocoa project through the provision of cocoa husbandry tools and materials, including polybags, shades cloths, pole pruners, wheelbarrows, pruning saws, shovels, tie wires, watering cans, measuring tapes, and budding tapes.

EU-STREIT PNG Supports Rural Women

These included 3000 young girls and women from 40 remote villages as well as educational institutions in the Sepik Region, over the last four months, to mainstream gender and youth inclusion into the agri-food value chain.

In its ongoing mission to mainstream gender concerns and youth inclusion into the agri-food value chain, the EU Funded UN Joint STREIT PNG Programme, in partnership with stakeholders, has conducted 12 sensitisation sessions and training workshops.

Improving Synergy, Support Delivery To Farmers

EU-STREIT PNG Programme held three rounds of consultation workshops with its counterparts to review the findings of the baseline survey report and examine how to enhance synergy among partners in delivering support to rural populations in the Greater Sepik region.       

Rural Sepik Farmers Observe IWD

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), under the EU Funded UN Joint STREIT PNG Programme, and in collaboration with local partners, hosted the event.

The occasion in Misim Village, Drekikir, East Sepik Province, aimed to recognise the contribution of women and girls, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation and building a more sustainable future for all.

The activities in Misim pulled together close to 1,000 farmers, including those from nearby ridges, who gathered as early as 7am to take part and observe.

Strengthening Fisheries Extension Services

They have been equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide enhanced extension services to fishers to support sustainable development of the fisheries value chain.  

The EU Funded UN Joint STREIT Programme in PNG supported the capacity development of 12 senior district fisheries officers on aquaculture and small fishing operations. The support is to further strengthen fisheries extension services at district level in the Greater Sepik Region.

Low Farming Production Factors Revealed

The study outlined that the lack of requisite knowledge and skills at all levels of production, inadequate transport and market infrastructure and limited financial literacy knowledge negatively affect the wellbeing of rural households in the Sepik Region.

Increasing Competitiveness Of Products

The scheme as a globally recognised mechanism to use in PNG will improve market access for origin-linked products and crafts produced and processed by local communities.

To ensure Papua New Guinea products and heritage benefit from and gain the protection and recognition with its competitiveness in overseas market, the EU Funded UN Joint STREIT Programme. In partnership with the PNG Government's Investment Promotion Authority, a two-day event on "Geographical Indication Awareness Conference (GIAC) was held in Port Moresby recently.

EU-STREIT Supporting Women’s Participation

The campaign covers women and girls’ contributions, challenges gender-based violence, and promote women and girls’ rights for inclusion, participation, and change.

To address gender-based violence (GBV) in the agri-food value chains and its subsequent negative impacts on inclusive participation and transformational change, the EU Funded UN Joint STREIT PNG Programme (EU-STREIT PNG), in close collaboration with HELP Resources, observed the Human Rights Day in East Sepik Province in early December, 2021.

1,500 Farmers In East Sepik To Get Support

The program will enable farmers to improve household income and food and nutrition security.

To increase economic return from aquaculture, riverine and coastal fisheries value chain in East Sepik Province is the purpose of a Letter of Agreement (LoA) signed between the FAO-led EU-STREIT PNG Programme and Foundation of Women in Agriculture Development (FOWIAD) in early November 2021.

Under this collaboration, the service provider will organize the formation of 60 fish farm clusters involving 1,500 fish farmers in Wosera-Gawi, Maprik, Yangoru-Saussia and Wewak districts.
