Egypt sarcophagus: Mystery black tomb opened in Alexandria

Could it contain the remains of ancient Greek leader Alexander the Great, or (less appealingly) a deadly curse?

According to experts who have now unsealed it, it's a no to both.

Instead, it revealed three skeletons and red-brown sewage water, which gave off an unbearable stench.

Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities had appointed a committee of archaeologists to open the relic, which was unearthed at a construction site.

Salah rejects talk of Egypt rift

Egypt's fate was confirmed on Wednesday as Uruguay beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 to ensure both the South American nation and hosts Russia will progress to the last 16 from Group A.

Having watched a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay from the bench, Salah made his first appearance since suffering an injury in the Champions League final as Egypt's hopes were all but ended in a 3-1 loss to Russia on Tuesday.

Salah helpless as Russia march on

Whatever was to unfold at Krestovsky Stadium – ultimately almost certainly a swift World Cup exit via a chastening 3-1 defeat for his country – Salah would be in no position to influence the outcome.

Having scattered defences across England and Europe throughout a dizzying 2017-18 campaign that yielded 44 goals, here Salah was on the periphery. A powerless, forlorn victim of circumstance.

Preview: Egypt v Uruguay

Salah's participation at the tournament was plunged into uncertainty when he suffered a shoulder injury in a challenge with Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos during Liverpool's Champions League final defeat last month.

The talismanic forward, who scored 44 goals in all competitions in an incredible debut season at Anfield, has insisted he will be fit for Friday's clash in Yekaterinburg.

However, head coach Hector Cuper, leading a side at a World Cup for the first time, says there is more to a team that reached the final of last year's Africa Cup of Nations than just Salah.

Gunman targets Coptic Christians in Cairo church and shop

Six civilians and a policeman died when a gunman tried to storm a church but was intercepted and arrested, it said.

It said the man had previously attacked a Coptic-owned shop in the same area, killing two brothers.

The interior ministry revised an earlier account given by the health ministry.

The initial report said 12 were dead, and suggested there were two attackers. It said one had been killed, and the other fled but was later captured.

Egypt airs video of murdered Italian student

Footage shows the 28-year-old speaking to the head of a Cairo street vendors' union, who reported him to police a few weeks before he died.

Mr Regeni was in Egypt conducting postgraduate research into trade unions when he disappeared on 25 January 2016.

His tortured body was found in a ditch nine days later.

In the video the union head, Mohamed Abdallah, repeatedly requests payments from the student, who was studying at Cambridge University in the UK.

"My wife has a cancer operation, I will do anything as long as there is money in it," said Mr Abdallah.

Egypt delays UN resolution on Israel as Trump raises concerns

A US official told the BBC that it had been considering an abstention, which would have allowed the motion to pass.

Israel then contacted Donald Trump's transition team to intervene, an Israeli official told Reuters.

Egypt's resolution called for Israel to stop building new settlements, which it said breached international law.

It was to have been voted on in the UN Security Council on Thursday, but Egypt withdrew it hours before the meeting was due to start.
