Mathew Nelson and his team engaged with students and teachers of schools including Kila Kila Secondary School, Koki TVET and Sevese Morea Primary, to educate students on the negative impacts of drug abuse and trafficking.

Nelson said no one is immune from the devastating consequences of drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

After speaking with the students and teachers, he is sure that students have a fair idea of the consequences associated with abusing and trafficking marijuana and homebrew, especially among their peer groups.

Conducting aggressive campaigns and educating teenagers and youths is the roadmap to curbing this issue, says Lawrence Tau, acting coordinator of non-state partners from the National Youth Development Authority.

A month-long awareness against drugs and alcohol will be carried out in primary and secondary schools in the 3 electorates of Port Moresby.
The take-home message from the awareness drive is simple; drugs are harmful and dangerous; offenders either end up behind bars or become psychiatrically ill most or all of their life.

That's why a video that police say Lamel Yancey of Arkansas uploaded to Facebook is causing furor online. It shows Yancey urging a diapered, 3-year-old to smoke a joint.

The boy is Yancey's nephew, police said.

In the video, Yancey hands off the joint to the boy in the back seat of a car.

"You want to hit the blunt, man?" Yancey asks the toddler.

The boy inhales and coughs.

"Weed," he responds, while his 17-year-old uncle records him.

The men were allegedly high on marijuana and harassing villagers who were trying to sell betelnut at the market.

Central police commander Laimo Asi says the men all have prior records for disturbing the peace at the market area and were arrested last year as well for fighting.

They have been detained at the central police station in town and will appear in court for mention today.

Asi says they will also be charged for  consuming drugs as well as threatening and using intimidating words.
