Suspect in doctor’s assault revealed

Internal Affairs have revealed that 26-year-old Isaac Wanui, from East Sepik Province, had allegedly stopped and accused Dr Newman Berry of dropping off rascals.

Dr Berry, who is attached to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services, was travelling back from Tokarara after dropping off his sister. This was around 9.30-10pm on Wednesday, May 31.

Dr Berry was stopped and brutally assaulted for no apparent reason, where he sustained severe head and facial injuries, including psychological trauma.

Suspect in doctor’s bashing arrested

Director for Internal Affairs, Robert Ali, confirmed that after investigations, the main suspected officer was identified and arrested last week.

Dr Newman Berry was returning from Tokarara after dropping his sister off, around 9.30-10pm on Wednesday, May 31, when he was stopped by police and accused of dropping off rascals.

He was brutally assaulted, where he sustained severe head and facial injuries, including psychological trauma.

This was revealed by NCD metropolitan superintendent, Commander Ben Turi.

The men will undergo the committal court process to establish if they have a case to answer to in the National Court.

Meanwhile, the police brutality case involving a doctor from the Port Moresby General is still ongoing.

Resident Medical Officer (RMO) attached to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services, Dr Newman Berry, was brutally assaulted on May 31 at around 9.30-10pm.

He suffered a smashed nose and a ragged tear in his right eardrum, among other head and facial injuries.

​Doctor’s assault: Police officers need to own up

Dr Berry was assaulted, without good reason, on May 31, where he suffered major injuries to his head and face. His car was also ransacked while being impounded at the Waigani Police Station.

While some progress into the case has been made, Police Internal Affairs Directorate director, Chief Superintendent Robert Ali, told Loop PNG that evidence is needed to point out the officers involved.

Cowards pick on the innocent: Police boss

“Real criminals are out there. Bashing up innocent victims is the work of incompetent officers,” Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi told Loop PNG.

“The real coppers go after criminals. It’s cowards who pick on the innocent.”

He has given his assurance that the perpetrators, including the police station commanders of Waigani and Badili, will be disciplined.

​Doctor’s car ransacked at police station

Dr Berry, a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) attached to the Port Moresby General Hospital Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services, was attacked by drunken policemen on Wednesday, May 31, without any form of reasoning.

Last Friday (June 9), with the assistance of Internal Police Affairs, he went to the Waigani station only to find his car in a disappointing state.

“We found out that my car battery, some tools, back seat cover, which was new, were stolen, as well as the safety sticker was ripped off,” Dr Berry told Loop PNG.

As of 3pm last Wednesday (June 7), the National Doctors Association gave the RPNGC 48 hours to deal with the perpetrators. If no favourable response was received by Friday, June 9, at 3pm, then about 145 doctors based in POM and NCD will stand down from duty.

However, NDA secretary, Dr Sam Yockopua, said doctors will return to work.

Dr Berry retells ordeal

This was the question that police officers asked before they started assaulting Dr Newman Berry, a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) attached to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services at the Port Moresby General Hospital.

The 28-year-old Engan doctor told Loop PNG that he was returning from Tokarara, after dropping his sister off, when he noticed a police roadblock at the Hohola 4 peak. This was around 9.30-10pm on Wednesday, May 31.

​Doctors issue ultimatum over police brutality issue

Dr Newman Berry, a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) attached to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services, was allegedly attacked by drunken policemen last Wednesday night, without any form of reasoning.

The National Doctors Association is now demanding that the Royal PNG Constabulary immediately identify, charge and dismiss the perpetrators. If this demand is not met within 48 hours, all NDA members in Port Moresby/NCD will stand down from duty.

“Doctors will cover for dire emergencies only during this time,” says NDA president Dr James Naipao.

​Doctors' association aims to end police brutality

This pertains to the alleged attack on a residential medical officer (RMO) from the Port Moresby General Hospital on Wednesday night.

Dr Newman Berry, an RMO at the Gynecology & Obstetrics Department, was attacked on his way home, where he sustained head and facial injuries.  

Members of NDA-POM/NCD branch met with their executives yesterday (June 5), where it was agreed that ample time be given for investigations and questions, among others, to be done by all parties concerned.
