Deep-sea tailings placement (DSTP)

Morobe to take state to court

This is based on advice and consultation with relevant community and church leaders of Morobe.

“In doing so and as the duly mandated political leader of Morobe, I call on every Morobean, in all corner of Morobe, to join me in fighting against Deep Sea Tailings Placement – DSTP,” said the governor.

“Our position has been to say ‘yes to Wafi-Golpu, no to DSTP’. That remains the position of the people of Morobe.

“I wish to announce that our Lawyers have been instructed to commence legal proceedings without delay against DSTP.”

Morobeans against DSTP

Representatives from the Evangelical Lutheran Church Lae Circuit aired their concerns at a recent gathering at the remote Bambok village of Nawaeb district.

They are saying no to DSTP because they do not want an incident similar to the 2019 Ramu NiCo slurry spill that polluted the marine life of Basamuk Bay in Madang Province.

Morobe against DSTP, governor tells forum

He was speaking at a consultative workshop in Lae, hosted by the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) on the deep-sea tailings placement from the Wafi-Golpu Mining Project into the Huon Sea in Morobe Province.

The workshop aimed to look at the impacts of DSTP with feedback from the Morobe Provincial Government and the landowners (impacted and affected) of Wafi-Golpu Mining and the people of Morobe.
