Broncos set sights on Maroons duo after no go for Nicho

Walters identified Brisbane’s lack of Queensland star power when he arrived at Red Hill and the departure of winger Xavier Coates next year to Melbourne will leave the Broncos without a current Maroons Origin player in their ranks.

Walters has already signed 2020 Maroons centre Brenko Lee for next season, but is keen to add more Maroons with off-contract duo Gagai and Capewell top of his "Kevolution" hit list in Brisbane.

Gagai creates Queensland history

Awarded to the player of the series, Gagai became the first winger to win the award, breaking down in tears on stage as he accepted the honour.

It was well deserved, with Gagai clearly the best from either side for the series after running for a series-high 577 metres and scoring two tries across the three games.

Speaking to NRL.com in the dressing sheds after the match, Gagai said the award would be something he would always treasure.

"I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I haven’t really won anything like this before, especially at this level of football," Gagai said.

Gagai to leave Newcastle

Gagai joined the Knights in 2012 and has played 116 of his 122 NRL matches for Newcastle.

Gagai informed his teammates before joining the Queensland Maroons side in camp on Monday.

"We are obviously disappointed that Dane has decided to leave the Club, but we respect the decision he has made with his family," CEO Matt Gidley said.

"Dane has been a wonderful player and ambassador for our club over the six years he has been with us.

"He will leave at season's end with our best wishes for the future."

Queensland all clear as Gagai passed fit

For the first time in the Maroons' camp for Game Two Gagai participated in a full field session on a soggy Sunday on the Gold Coast and came through with flying colours. The 25-year-old didn't quite hit top speed during the session but had no trouble striding out and said that he felt no discomfort throughout the opposed session.

"I ran out there and got up to a decent speed and it didn't cross my mind at all so I felt really comfortable with it," Gagai said following the session.

"I'll keep getting treatment until game day but at this stage I'm 100 per cent."
