PNG Lewas finalise preparations

Having arrived in Amsterdam last week, the PNG Lewas have familiarised themselves with the foreign conditions in the Netherlands by playing four practice matches; winning two against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Women and losing against Thailand (in the last over) and finally against Ireland in their last warm up game.

The second loss came in the hands of Ireland Women by eight wickets last night.

Pulsan encourages Lewas

As part of their training, the Lewas are required to do strength and conditioning coaching at the High Performance Training Centre Gym.

Training alongside the team is a world champion Linda Pulsan who took time to share some words of encouragement with the team.

The current Pacific Games Gold Medalist in Power Lifiting who is committed to doing her best and bringing a medal home for PNG has a  unique take on how to make your mark in the world of sports.

Linda spoke to the girls about three key areas - sacrifice, "never give up" and 100 % commitment.

Lewas player secures ICC Rookie Placement

Ravini Oa is among eight cricketers from five Member countries that will head to Australia to join each of the WBBL franchise clubs.

The two-week placement will provide the players the opportunity to experience elite cricket environments, accelerate their development through training sessions and to take back what they have learnt to their respective national teams. In addition, the rookies will also have the opportunity to take part in media and promotional activities.

Oa, who will represent Perth Scorchers, is looking forward to this experience.  

Netherlands to host women’s qualifier

The format of the ICC WWT20Q will remain the same as the last edition in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2015. There will be two groups of four, where each team will play each other in each group in the group stage. After the conclusion of the group stage, the top two from each group will progress to the Trophy competition and contest for a place in the WWT20 2018.

The bottom two from each group will contest for the Plate.

The team took out the trophy, which was won last month, around in the store, allowing the media to take photos and ask questions.

Captain of the Lewas, Pauke Siaka, said the team was grateful to sponsor City Pharmacy Limited for the continued support.

General Manager of Retail Operations at CPL, Lee Green, said the company was proud to be associated with the Lewas, who have been a success story for women’s sports in PNG.

After beating Samoa by six wickets, the Lewas booked their ticket to the Global Qualifier for the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20.

​It was no easy feat for Lewas

Coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick congratulated her charges for maintaining discipline on all facet of the game. 

The former Australian Test Fast Bowler said: “The competition was of a high standard with all teams adapting and improving as the tournament progressed.

“Our early loss to Samoa meant that we needed to ensure our net run rate remained as good as or better than theirs, to make sure our only focus leading into the last game was to win and not think about a margin.”

She said it was pleasing to see improvements across all three disciplines.

Lewas progress to T20 Global Qualifier

This comes after their six wicket win over Samoa on the last day of the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20 – East Asia-Pacific Qualifier 2017.

Samoa finished at 9/79 after knocks from captain Regina Lili’I (32) and Lelia Bourne (19).

Despite losing four wickets for just seven runs, captain Pauke Siaka (19) and Brenda Tau (20) steered the Lewas home to victory in the 19th over.

​PNG Lewas thump Japan at qualifier

Needing to win by a healthy margin against Japan to keep themselves in the hunt in the ICC Women’s World T20 EAP Qualifier, the Lewas were sent into bat on another pleasant day in Sano, Japan.

Lewas cruise to third win

Vanutatu were unable to put any solid partnerships together and at the end of 20 overs finished at 8/81.

Opener Judy Avok (47) top scored, falling three runs shy of a half-century after running out of batting partners.

With the ball, Kaia Arua (2/13), Ravina Oa (2/10) and Sibona Jimmy (2/13) finished with two wickets apiece for the Lewas.

Despite losing openers Konio Oala (5) and Tanya Ruma (1), the Lewas, led by their captain Pauke Siaka (33), smashed their way to victory, reaching the target with five wickets in hand and 33 balls to spare.

Ruma guides Lewas to 78 run win

This was at the 2018 ICC Women’s World T20 – East Asia-Pacific Qualifier 2017.

Ruma’s knock, which included five 4s and two 6s, ensured the Lewas reached triple figures. She was assisted along the way by Sibona Jimmy (27) and Pauke Siaka (14).

The Lewas batted out the 20 overs to finish at 3/138.

Japan proved no match in their run chase as the Lewas destroyed their batting attack, with four batters all going for ducks.

The Lewas will play Samoa tomorrow.

Vicky Araa was the chief destroyer, taking 3/9 to see Japan all bowled out for 60.
