Pacific tsunami threat following Chile quake

The tremor at 2254 UTC was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says waves of between one and three metres could hit French Polynesia.

Waves of up to a metre are forecast for New Caledonia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Samoas, the Cook Islands, Tokelau, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tonga, Solomon Islands, and the scattered islands over the north Pacific.

Smaller waves may hit Tuvalu, Papua New Guinea and Nauru.

Rapa Nui plan massive marine reserve

The Guardian reports that encompassing 447,000 square kilometres of ocean, the reserve would be the world's biggest, if created before another one proposed by the UK around the Pitcairn Islands, the nearest land over two-thousand kilometres west.

The idea to create the reserve around Easter Island stems from concerns within the local Rapa Nui community about the impact of large-scale illegal fishing in their waters.

10 former Chilean officers charged in Victor Jara killing

The charges announced late Wednesday by Judge Miguel Vazquez include homicide and kidnapping in the slaying of Jara and former military police head Littre Quiroga Carvajal.

Jara was dragged down to the basement of an indoor stadium that had been converted into a detention and torture center after the Sept. 11, 1973 coup.
