Chile cancels climate and Apec summits amid mass protests

President Sebastián Piñera said the decision had caused him "pain" but his government needed "to prioritise re-establishing public order".

The COP25 climate summit was scheduled for 2 to 13 December, while the Apec trade forum was next month.

The UN said it was now looking at alternative venues.

World leaders were to gather at this year's Conference of the Parties (COP) to discuss the implementation of the Paris Accord - a landmark international climate agreement, first signed at COP21 in December 2015.

6.7 magnitude quake hits North-Central Chile

The quake struck at a depth of 53 kilometers with an epicenter some 15 km southwest of Coquimbo, USGS said.

An elderly man and an elderly woman from Coquimbo suffered cardiac arrests as a result of the quake, police said, while there were several landslides reported on national highways.

The earthquake, which hit at 0132 GMT (Sunday), was felt in Valparaiso, O'Higgins and the region of the capital Santiago, as well as in Atacama and Coquimbo up north.

Earlier this week, Sanchez admitted to struggling with mental exhaustionafter a disappointing start to life at Old Trafford, and even considered pulling out of Chile's friendlies with Sweden and Denmark.

"The change of club was something that was very abrupt - it was the first time I've changed clubs in January - but many things have happened in my life that are difficult," Sanchez told Chilean media on Thursday.

Chile APEC officials impressed

Chile APEC Coordination Authority CEO, Mario Artaza, said this during a tour of the APEC Haus in Port Moresby.

Artaza and officials from Chile are in PNG to see how the country is preparing for the Summit.

Chile will host the 2019 APEC Summit, its second time to do so.

The Chilean officials arrived in Port Moresby on Saturday and are currently touring the capital to witness preparations for next year.

Accompanied by APEC PNG Coordination Authority CEO, Chris Hawkins, Artaza says he is impressed.

Chile ready for Ronaldo – Pizzi

The Portugal captain scored twice and registered one assist in three group games at the Confederations Cup to help his side reach the semi-finals.

The European champions will play Chile in the last four in what will be their second match at Kazan Arena, after the Copa America holders finished second in Group B behind Germany.

Pizzi believes Ronaldo can only be a danger when Portugal are playing well as a united team but he has faith his own players know how to handle him.

Millions without water in Chile capital, Santiago

Officials said the water supply from the Maipo river would be cut to most of the city until the water flowed clear.

People stocked up on bottled water and the authorities ordered restaurants and businesses to remain closed.

Officials also postponed the start of the school term on Monday.

Emergency personnel said the water rushing down from the Andes had also cut roads and isolated thousands of people.

Chile to create one of world's largest marine parks around Easter Island

If the island’s indigenous Rapa Nui people approve the plan after a consultation by the mainland government, fishing will be banned from a 631,368 sq km (243,630 sq miles) area – though still allowed up to 50m out for local fishermen – in an effort to stem illegal fishing.

Joshua S Reichert, lead on environment initiatives at Pew, said: “World famous for its Moai statues, Easter Island will now be known as a global leader in ocean conservation.

“This announcement is an important step toward establishing the world’s first generation of great parks in the sea.”

Pacific tsunami warnings still in place

The earthquake has claimed at least 10 lives in Chile.

The French High Commission had warned the people on the Marquesas Islands to prepare for waves of up to 1.4 metres last night.

The Geophysical Laboratory in Tahiti says waves of slightly higher than one metre can be expected in the Marquesas and no higher than 30 centimetres in the most populated parts of the territory.

The French High Commissioner called for people in the Marquesas not to stay on the coast last night and to check moorings.

Tsunami advisory lifted in American Samoa

Tsunami warnings were in place for much of the Pacific following yesterday's massive 8.3 earthquake in Chile.

The earthquake has claimed at least 11 lives in Chile.

The Pacific Tsunami warning Centre has now advised that there is no further tsunami threat for American Samoa as a result of the massive earthquake in Chile.

However residents have been advised to be observant and exercise normal caution if you are in or near the ocean.
