Central woman eyes garment business

And the 21-year-old Central lass from Marshall Lagoon has made it her intention to complete her training in the field and pursue a business career in the sector.

Nancy is among 32 individuals who graduated in the 27th Garment and Textile Training Program, facilitated by the Small to Medium Enterprises Corporation (SMEC).

She topped three of the four courses offered in the Certificate 1 Program, walking away with prizes in Garment Construction, Screen Printing, and Hand Sewing Machine Repair.

Reserved business a contentious issue

Acting Managing Director for the Small to Medium Enterprise Corporation (SMEC), Steven Maken, made this known in his presentation at the Consultative Implementation & Monitoring Council National Development Forum today.

Maken presented ‘Experiences on implementation of the SME Policy & Master Plan’ which he highlighted legislations considered by the SMEC to be implemented, and the very contentious one of reserved businesses.

“It will not come easy, some people have enjoyed certain things for too long, it will come down with some fight,” said Maken.

Women in Business Expo brings huge interest

Since the opening of the Women In Business Expo Trade Centre last Thursday, young women and mothers have flown in from all over the country to come in and showcase their handmade products.

These include soaps, shampoos, hand crafted jewelry, meri blouses, bags and caps made from bilums and materials, artifacts to flower arrangements, traditionally cooked delicacies and many more.

Businessman believes in small business opportunities

Edward Magarua Kiza, a former public servant and now a successful businessman in Madang, says the only way for his Usino-Bundi people to get out of poverty and unnecessary traditional obligations and participate in economic changes is to learn and understand the standard business principles.

He said this during the launching of the Wekumara Poultry Project workshop on January 31, at Uria Village in the Ward 19 area of Usino LLG.

Ben works to be a businessman

He is a young Simbu man who decided to try his skills in the small to medium enterprise business. You find him and a group of young Simbu men daily at their tent selling thongs to earn an income.

Asked what his aspirations were, he replies:  “I want to be a businessman. I want to own my own shop and my own cars.”

“I have my small brothers here who are currently on holidays assisting me. It is my dream for them to complete their education, but they must lend a hand. Nothing is for free,” says Ben.

We’re China’s favourite investment target in Pacific

Chinese Ambassador to PNG, Li Ruiyou said "PNG has become China's second largest trading partner and largest investment destination country in the Pacific Islands Region."

Department of Trade, Commerce and Industry statistics show that "bilateral trade between PNG and China was more than US$2 billion in 2013’’.

Ambassador Ruiyou told China Shenyang International Technical Economic Corporation, the company tasked to build the multi-billion-kina Pacific Marine Industrial Zone Project to do the job  to an international standard.

2 New Facebook Tools for Local Business Advertisers

Facebook introduced two new features aimed at local business advertisers: an easier way to automatically add information via the Locations tool, and local insights.

The Locations update is available globally through Facebook’s ads application-programming interface, with Power Editor coming on board shortly, and local insights are rolling out to pages in the U.S. “starting today and over the coming weeks.”

Council wants more Fijian businesses in PNG

There are about eight Fijian businesses currently in PNG.

PNG/Fiji Business Council Chair Nauzab Fareed says they want others to follow suit.

“If they have a clear manufacturing or business plan, I’m sure that they can go to PNG and take it to the next level. During the last 12 months we have assisted at least three to four firms to explore the PNG market and to understand whether it is possible for them to make investments’’.

PNG Business summit to be held in Australia

The summit will be an impressive 2-day program that will feature presentations, panel discussions and Questions and Answer sessions with international business leaders.

Some of the topics will include how businesses operating in PNG can benefit from emerging technology, PNG's next wave of gas development, and opportunities for business in provincial development.
