​Police urge Lae residents to be vigilant

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr confirmed with Loop PNG that 17 of the male prisoners were killed during the escape, three were recaptured and 57 are still at large.

“We anticipate an increase in criminal activities in the city, with these people on the run. The public must be vigilant,” Wagambie Jnr said.  

“The majority of those that escaped were arrested for serious crimes and were in custody awaiting trial.”

The Lae Police boss appealed to the 57 prisoners still on the run to surrender.  

Tara was seeking MP’s help when breakout happened

A situation report by Tara which was presented to newly appointed CS Commissioner Bernard Nepo,  on Friday Feb 26 at Buimo in Lae said:  “I had just finished with the Member for Lae Open Honourable Louzaya Kouza to give her a brief on the situation inside the compound at 1pm regarding the huge over-crowding and was discussing with her the for possible assistance for the  outer perimeter fence and additional accommodation for the staff.”
