Filipino’s shooting case adjourned

Edson Alojipan appeared before court today. His case has been further adjourned to the end of the month.

Alojipan is facing one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder following the shootout on the evening of February 15, inside Boroko Foodworld.

Police served their investigation files on the Dragon security employee, in May.

He is now assisting his lawyer, draft his submission in response to the police hand-up brief.

The Waigani Committal Court has given them till next week to file their submissions.

Filipino in Foodworld incident served case files

Edson Alojipan appeared at the Waigani Committal Court today from custody at Bomana for mention.

His lawyer informed the court he was served the hand-up brief or investigation files by police.

The court is however yet to receive a copy of the files.

The defendant’s case had been adjourned for two weeks.

Alojipan is facing one count of wilful murder and two counts of attempted murder allegations. He has been refused bail by the National Court and remains in remand at Bomana.

Filippino guard refused bail

Edson Tinalojipan on Tuesday sought bail from the National Court on grounds of his family welfare.

He is facing one count of willful murder and two counts of attempted murder allegations.

He claims to be the breadwinner whose family in the Philippines rely on however the ground was not seen by the court as an exceptional circumstance to grant bail.

His lawyer was also unable to show the court,  previous court decisions where bail was granted to persons charged with willful murder who were allowed bail based on the welfare of their families.

Video of shooting tampered with: Police

The footage was not taken from the original close-circuit TV (CCTV) and is not the same as the original footage that police have in their possession.

Police believe it was tampered with before it was posted online.

The main suspect is still in police custody and police are liaising with Boroko Foodworld management and the Philippines Embassy as the investigation progresses.

Investigators will speak with Foodworld: Police

NCD metropolitan superintendent, Perou N’Dranou said as much as they are trying to build and compile information and evidence that can be used in court, leaking important evidence like that is uncalled for.

N’Dranou said he has the original footage but did not have any knowledge of the leaked footage until this morning.

“It is unethical and it is against the law for me to use the same. And that is where it will disrupt the investigations,” stated N’Dranou.

Governor condemns Boroko Foodworld shooting

He said the incident is a wakeup call for relevant authorities that issue firearm licenses to foreigners.

Governor Yama pointed out that many outsiders coming into the country have not met standards set by authorities to operate security firms.

He said the incident at the Boroko Foodworld last week was uncalled for.

“We cannot have such incidents happening in our country.

Video of Boroko Foodworld shooting leaked online

The video depicted how the incident took place that Thursday (Feb 15) evening between 7 and 7:30pm.

If genuine, the footage clearly showed the suspect shooting the deceased with several shoppers and supermarket staff in close proximity. 

According to Police, before the suspect gunned down the man, both had a confrontation in the shop that saw other colleagues intervene.

This was also evident in the security footage.

Witnesses interviewed on Foodworld shooting

Although a motive is yet to be established, according to latest police investigations, 9mm Glock pistols were used by the two foreign (Filipino) guards (a supervisor and his subordinate) during the time of shooting.

Police also say both were employees of Dragon Security.

The foreign guard supervisor was shot dead while the other Filipino is in police custody.

Furthermore, two nationals (both children) sustained injuries from fragments of the bullet and were hospitalised.
