Lelang lauds Aussie police

The suspect's apprehension has also revealed her connections to business interests associated with certain political figures in Papua New Guinea.

Mr Lelang is calling on the Australian Federal Police to work with the Royal PNG Constabulary and Interpol to conduct more investigations into the transnational crime associated with the lady and awarding of contracts, using Australian aid money for asylum projects and incidences of other transnational crimes.

The 903kg (1990lb) haul of the drug, also called ice, is estimated to have a street value of A$898m (£546m; $680m), Justice Minister Michael Keenan said.

The drugs were concealed between floorboards in a shipment sent to Melbourne, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Two men have been charged with drug trafficking offences.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull praised the police operation, describing drug traffickers as "merchants of death".

The December 25 bust, along with a seizure of 1336 pounds (606 kilograms) of cocaine from the same syndicate earlier this year, was worth about $259 million (AUD$360 million) and is Australia's largest ever haul from a single cartel.

Police said it was among their ten largest seizures ever.

The investigation, codenamed Operation Okesi, was a joint effort between Australian Federal Police, New South Wales Police and Australia's Border Force.
