Australian team evacuates Olympic Village after fire, Kitty Chiller furious over silenced alarms

About 100 officials and athletes were briefly evacuated when the fire broke out in a car park rubbish bin.

It is believed the fire was caused by a cigarette. The Olympic Village is a non-smoking venue.

Chiller said the team received a certificate two days ago to say the building complied with fire standards.

"What we have subsequently found is that the fire alarms had been silenced while they were carrying out maintenance on the building next door to ours," she said.

Hundreds rally in Australia over juvenile 'torture' footage

Demonstrators gathered in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane to express shock at footage showing indigenous boys being tear-gassed.

The video also shows a boy wearing a "split hood" while cuffed to a chair.

Australia's Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, has called for an investigation.

However, he rejected calls for a broader national inquiry.

Around 700 people rallied in Melbourne and 300 in Sydney, according to Reuters.

Footage of the abuse first emerged on national broadcaster ABC's Four Corners programme.

UK offered Brexit free trade deal with Australia

Theresa May described the move as "very encouraging" and insisted it showed Brexit can work for Britain.

In a phone call to the new PM, her Australian counterpart Malcolm Turnbull said he urgently wanted to open up trading between the two countries.

Liam Fox, the new international trade secretary, said he was already "scoping about a dozen free trade deals".

But Britain cannot sign any deals while it is still an EU member.

Mrs May said: "I have been very clear that this government will make a success of our exit from the European Union.

Vietnam jails four asylum seekers over voyage to Australia

According to Voice Australia — a group helping Vietnamese asylum seekers — 42-year-old Nguyen Dinh Quy was sentenced to 24 months in jail and his 39-year-old wife Huynh Thi Kieu was jailed for 27 months for leaving Vietnam without official approval.

Their fellow accused Tran Thi Lua, 37, and 35-year-old Nguyen Minh Quyet were also convicted and jailed for 30 and 24 months respectively.

PNG's Supreme Court ruling does not mean Manus Island centre must shut: Dutton

 

The court ruled Australia's detention of asylum seekers was illegal, and ordered the PNG and Australian governments to immediately take steps to end their detention.

Last Friday night, PNG's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations Fred Sarufa told the United Nations the court ruling meant the centre would close.

He said PNG was working with Australia on the Manus processing centre "in the light of a recent Papua New Guinea Supreme Court decision to close the centre".

Canberra ignores PNG court, rules out return of detainees

Two weeks ago, PNG's Supreme Court ruled that Canberra's detention of hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers on Manus Island since 2013 was unconstitutional.

However, Australia has to date failed to act on the ruling, suggesting its detainees are PNG's concern.

In a radio interview, Turnbull said his government was in talks with Cambodia and other unspecified countries in efforts to find a home for the detainees.

He confirmed that he had been in talks with New Zealand which offered his and previous Australian governments to take 300 of the refugees.

Owers Corner interpretive display unveiled

The display is the first of a series that TPA would like to install in the Kokoda Track region. It has been developed as part of the Heritage Supporting Tourism project.

This new interpretive display will provide visitors with an insight in the shared history between the two countries, as well as the region's natural, cultural and military history.

Tourism Minister Tobias Kulang unveiled the interpretive display on behalf of the Kokoda Initiative and said this is a significant achievement in preserving this tourism heritage and site.

Fight for West Papua freedom rages on

Village Huts to boost numbers for local tour operators in PNG

The new website is expected to boost tourist numbers to existing visitor destinations, open up new and unexplored tourist destinations and increase incomes for villages and communities located in tourist operator sites.

In launching the website, Australian High Commission Counsellor (Governance)  Jodie McAllister said the website would usher in new avenues for tourists to access the wonderful places and activities on offer in Papua New Guinea.
