Why APEC matters for PNG

This was the statement by Carlos Kuriyama, Senior Analyst at the APEC Secretariat in Singapore.

Carlos Kuriyama was one of the three panelists at the APEC Discussion Series at UPNG this week.

The theme of the event was ‘Why APEC matters for PNG?’, where Papua New Guineans joined local and international APEC experts for a dialogue on the importance of hosting the region’s premier economic forum.

APEC Study Centre to be established

The ASC will assist the APEC Secretariat in developing and analyzing APEC Policies for the 2018 Summit as well as beyond.

The MOU was signed by Chief Secretary, Isaac Lupari, and NRI Director, Dr Charles Yala, and witnessed by PNG APEC Ambassador, Ivan Pomaleu, as well as Government staff and the media.

Ambassador Pomaleu said the signing was a significant moment, which will pave way for the first ever ASC.

Dihm: Govt departments must lead in APEC preparations

Foreign Affairs secretary William Dihm highlighted this during an APEC briefing for the Department of Foreign Affairs recently.

The briefing was carried out by the APEC Authority, APEC Secretariat and PNG Defence.

As a lead up to APEC 2018, the briefing was timely for the Foreign Affairs officers to plot where the department will come into play in the roadmap together with other line departments and agencies.

Dihm highlighted that working in a ‘whole-of-Government approach' means they have less institutional capacity.
