Former rugby league and rugby union star, Wendell Sailor, dropped by the Cricket PNG Office and Amini Park today.
Sailor, the former Maroons, Brisbane Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons, Australian Kangaroos, Queensland Reds, NSW Waratahs and Australian Wallabies representative was able to drop by Amini Park to watch the Hebou PNG Barramundis, Hebou PNG U19 Garamuts and the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas go through their paces.
“We all rise as stars because of our people, our families. Learning this in my childhood days has really pushed me to be a good player and be tough to be selected. I love playing cricket, golf apart from rugby,” said Sailor.
Sailor, who is currently in Port Moresby for the Carbine Club Luncheon and the Rugby League World Cup Match between the PNG Kumuls and Wales, jumped at the opportunity to come and watch the best PNG cricketers in action.
“I’ve decided to come around and see the Hebou PNG Barramundis, the U19s and Women (Lewas) as they prepare for the upcoming tournaments. They’re doing a good job and training for these stars is flowing well.
“The coaches are putting all their effort in for the best team to play for their people,” said Sailor.
Sailor spent some time speaking to all the national teams. He was particularly impressed with the rise of the Hebou PNG Barramundis.
“I am glad to be around you all today during your training session and seeing your attitude towards it. I am amazed to learn your ranking in the world.
“I’m sure there has been a lot of hard work put in and I praise you for a job well done.
“I also would like to congratulate you all on your win in the recent ICC matches on home soil.
“I wish you all the best in the upcoming tournaments,” concluded Sailor.
The Hebou PNG U19 Garamuts are currently training for the 2018 ICC Under 19 World Cup, while the Hebou PNG Barramundis are training for the ICC ICUP/WCLC Round 7 Fixtures against Hong Kong and the City Pharmacy PNG Lewas are training for ICC Women’s World T20 Global Qualifier next year.
Sailor played 222 matches in the NRL for both the Brisbane Broncos (189 matches) and St George Illawarra Dragons (33 matches), 16 for Australian Kangaroos, 14 for Queensland in the State of Origin, 55 matches in Super Rugby for both the Queensland Reds (47 matches) and NSW Waratahs (8 matches) as well as 37 matches for the Australian Wallabies.
