TPA supports SAPNG to host world surfing event in Madang

The PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) has injected K200, 000 to help with preparations for the Men’s and Women’s Longboard World Championship Tour that will take place in the country in March of this year.

CEO of PNG TPA, Jerry Agus said the sponsorship to Surfing Association of PNG (SAPNG) will be at much larger level given that the country is hosting a major international sporting event that will be streamed live to a 120 million viewers all around the world.

“In terms of marketing, such an event televised on global networks over 10 days will be a major hit for PNG.

“This will go a long way in enhancing the profile and image of PNG to the rest of the world, not only for surfing but for PNG generally as a desired destination for all international travellers,” said Agus.

In receiving the cheque yesterday, President of SAPNG, Andrew Abel thanked TPA for their support.

“This is the culmination of 10 years of negotiations with the World Surf League which is the Formula 1 of surfing.

“They tour around the world to a 150 nations and we’re very privileged to have the 36 male and 18 female elite surfers come to PNG.

“This will really showcase PNG in a positive light,” said Abel.

Able extended his thanks to Kumul Consolidated Holdings who are the naming rights sponsor of the Men’s and Women’s Longboard World Championship Tour.

The event will be held in Madang at the Tupira Surf Club from March 18-25
