Following the successful campaign of Team PNG at the Pacific Games in Samoa in July this year, the Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) will be holding a workshop to evaluate the performance of Team PNG at those Games.
PNGOC has invited National Federation executives along with two national coaches and two athletes – a male and a female athlete – to participate in the workshop which will be held in Port Moresby this Saturday.
Secretary General of PNGOC, Auvita Rapilla, said the workshop provides an opportunity to reflect on Team PNG’s performance, analyze selection processes and preparations in order to improve for the next Pacific Games.
“It doesn’t end after one Game, we have to come back and plan and prepare again for the next event – we continue to strive for excellence,” she said.
Among the things discussed at the workshop will be a review of Team PNG’s Games results, performance analysis, justification process and also the support provided to teams during the Games.
The PNG Sports Foundation will be part of the program as well with remarks from its Executive Director, Peter Tsiamalili. There will also be a presentation from the High Performance Sport division and the National Sports Institute.
Team PNG’s Chef de Mission to Samoa, Emma Waiwai, said Team PNG continues to grow with every Games experience and a lot of this improvement comes from learning from past events and activities.
“Being successful does not mean that we did everything right, there is always a lesson to be learned and this workshop provides that opportunity for us and our teams who participated,” Waiwai said.
Team PNG finished second on the medal tally with 39 gold, 57 silver and 35 bronze medals to record their most successful Games ever on foreign soil.
The workshop provides the opportunity for feedback from sports as they look at their own individual team preparations for the Games.
PNGOC aims to interact more with its member federations in workshops like this so that sports can be better equipped with the right information for their own development and participation at different international sporting events.
