Pukpuks go down fighting

The PNG Pukpuks were outclassed, going down 42-12 to USA in the Challenge Trophy semi-final of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2018 - Hamilton.

PNG were dealt a blow early in the encounter when their leading try scorer at Hamilton, Gairo Kapana, was sin binned, leaving PNG a man down.

USA capitalised on this, scoring their first try through Kevon Aaron Williams. USA ran in two more tries in the first half to cruise to a 21-0 lead at the break.

USA cracked through the Pukpuks’ defence four more times in the second term through Matai Leuta, Martin Iosefo, Carlin Isles and one more to Williams.

The Pukpuks never gave up and were rewarded with two late tries to Kapana, who picked up his fifth five pointer of the tournament and Willy Shalandra, who crossed for his first.

USA will now meet Argentina in the Challenge Trophy final at 3:33pm this afternoon.
