PNGRFU looking to host Oceania 7s qualifier

The Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union (PNGRFU) is looking forward to bid as host for the Oceania Sevens World Cup Qualifiers next year, given the newly-furnished Bava Park complex.

President of PNG Rugby Football Union, Steven Kami, said with the newly-furnished Park being given to PNGRFU, the Board has seen this as a great opportunity for PNG to host the Oceania qualifying tournament next year.

“One of our aims going forward in PNG rugby is to try and host the Oceania qualifying tournament in August to qualify for the Sevens World Cup in Los Angelos next year,” Kami said.

“With all the major teams like Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and Samoa, who were qualified and are now the permanent members of International Rugby Board (IRB) circuit, that means we really have to be fit and top with the golden opportunity playing on the world stage,” he added.

Kami claims that there is no better pitch for rugby in the South Pacific than Bava Park.

“The fact that we have a first-class venue and the fact that we have run a first-class tournament; it has allowed us to say that we can host a world-class rugby tournament in PNG.”
