PNG powerlifters haul in seven medals

The PNG powerlifting team powered through to win seven medals; four of which were gold at the Brisbane Open held over the weekend.

World powerlifting icon, Linda Pulsan, led the way winning gold plus taking out the Best Female Lifter Trophy award.

Hitolo Kevau, Kalau Andrew and Livingstone Sikoli also won gold medals for PNG in their weight classes, while Henry Kelo, Martin Titus and Anderson Mangela picked up silver and bronze.

80 lifters from five countries competed at the Brisbane Open, hosted by Powerlifting Australia.

Countries represented included Australia, New Zealand, Nauru, Tuvalu, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

The PNG powerlifting team is currently in preparation for the Oceania Championships in Singapore in December, where 10 countries with 200 lifters will battle for the coveted title of Oceania Champion in their various weight classes.

The team management believes that the experience and confidence the team has gained from lifting in Brisbane will inspire and motivate the athletes to show their best in Singapore, and bring home more medals for PNG.
