PNG aims to improve in defence against Sweden

Papua New Guinea will be aiming to improve on their defence and attack when they play Sweden this afternoon at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

The second match of Pool A will start at 7pm under the lights, straight after the Korea DPR and Brazil match to start play at 4pm.

Both teams came out winless in their first encounters. Brazil showed their class with a 9-0 hiding of the host nation and Korea DPR defeated Sweden 2-0.

Papua New Guinea did not qualified on merit for the 2016 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup but is participating as host nation.

But the expectations from home fans are still high and Coach Lisa Cole who is a former USA international will know what to say to her chargers.

Cole said after the match against the Brazilians that the chance to play at this international arena will help improve the standard of women’s soccer in the country.

“Every country had their first world cup at some point and they didn’t go out and win their first game so we need to continue to look at improving,” the former USA international said.

Sweden will aim to grab the three points with a win to improve their chances of a top two finish.

Sweden head coach Calle Barrling said the players failed themselves against the Koreans and must improve on their finishing touches to score goals.

Meanwhile, in today’s other matches to be played at Port Moresby’s Bava Park. Spain and Japan will kick of the proceedings at 4pm, and Nigeria and Canada complete the Pool B challenge  starting at 7pm.
