Netball match to promote hand washing

Netball Papua New Guinea in partnership with WaterAid PNG yesterday hosted an exhibition match on Anzac Day which saw the PNG Pepes defeat the PNG Maleos 17-12.

The match played at the Rita Flynn courts yesterday was attended by Australian Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove.

The main aim of the partnership is to improve grassroots sports participation; to improve hygiene behaviours alongside access to safe water and sanitation; and the participation and leadership of women and girls.

President, Julienne Leka Maliaki said Netball PNG was grateful for the opportunity to promote this partnership which is fundamental to rural communities.

“Netball is thankful to the Australian Government to receive high level visitors to attend our events to promote this mutual partnership.

“Just as the burden of domestic water and family health largely falls on women and girls in Papua New Guinea, netball is perfectly placed as a predominant women’s sport to champion the rights, leadership and participation of women and girls to bring behavioural change in rural communities,” said  Maliaki.

The WaSH and Sport for Development Program is supported by the Australian Government in partnership with Papua New Guinea.
