Monagi heads to Qatar

Adrine Monagi heads to Doha, Qatar, today (25 September) for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics where she will compete in the 100m hurdles event on October 4.

Monagi, who has a personal best of 13.82 seconds in the 100m hurdles, won the silver medal in this event at the recent Pacific Games in Apia, clocking 13.99 secs behind Australian Brianna Beahan.

Athletics PNG says: “Despite being only 24 years of age, Monagi has lots of big competition experience, having attended the Commonwealth Youth Games, IAAF World Junior Championships, two Commonwealth Games, several Pacific Games and Oceania Championships and a number of NCAA Division two national championships in the USA.”

Monagi had the opportunity for a pre departure race last weekend at the PNG Air Southern Region Championships at the Sir John Guise stadium where she clocked 14.58 seconds.

Athletics PNG President Tony Green said this was a good performance considering that it was a low key race with no one to push her.

“She has worked hard to stay in shape after the Pacific Games so hopefully she can run sub 14 seconds in Doha.”
