Kapi Natto welcomes Chung’s resignation

President of Football Federation PNG, John Kapi Natto, has welcomed the news of the sudden resignation of Oceania Football Confederation President, David Chung.

Chung, who is also the current President of the PNG Football Association and one of FIFA’s vice presidents, stepped down from his post this week amid accusations of corruption stemming from an audit into a multimillion-dollar project to build a new headquarters for the OFC.

At a press conference yesterday in Port Moresby, Kapi Natto said what has happened has trickled down to the outlook of football in PNG.

“We see only six members of football trying to operate in this nation. They are not running their soccer. It’s AWOL. We see administration not functioning. A classic example is the National Soccer League, a competition that I started years ago.

“I will say again that I welcome the news from OFC.”

He further called on Chung to resign as President of the PNGFA.

“When leaders are not running things well, we will have problems all the way down at the local level. Enough is enough. I want football to reconcile. I want soccer to come back together.

“He (David Chung) is not fit and proper to run this organisation because football is falling apart.”

Kapi Natto also appealed to the OFC and FIFA to come down to PNG and mediate to help put football in PNG back together.

“Please come and sort out the problems in PNG football. This country is dynamic and powerful in football.

“We’ve done that in club football through Hekari and for PNG at the 2016 Nation’s Cup. This country is a sleeping giant in football.

“If our leaders are not running football well in PNG, then they all have to step down.”

Kapi Natto, who has the backing of 12 out of the 18 football associations in the country, finished by saying FFPNG will continue to spread football across the whole of PNG.

“I am still going to run football the way the people want it.

“So to the executives of PNGFA, unite with me now.”
