Coach notes improvement in PNG football

There is an improvement of football in the country.

This was stated by Toti City FC coach, Peter Gunemba, after touching down today at the Jackson International Airport with the lads from Lae, Morobe Province.

Finishing second in the Pool A matches of the OFC Champions League 2018 played this month in Vanuatu, Gunemba said the team did quite well despite not having any lead up matches to the tournament.

However, the team still played four games which gave them enough workout to get them prepared for the tournament.

“Overall I was very pleased and proud with the performance of the boys.”

He said analyzing the performance of the players with countries like Fiji and Vanuatu, the team have progressed well in skill and tactic.

“Because in Vanuatu, soccer is the national sport and if we can perform and play against countries like this, we can be a rare and driving force to push the game forward to a new level.”

He said a few things that may have caused the team to lose its winning streak was lack of rest and if the team had played more lead up matches to boost their physical fitness, they would have been able to endure the amounting pressure of the games.

“But they did all their best to play the two games within the space of four days and this is something I noted that really affected the performance of the boys.”

Although the team had expected a winning smudge through the tournament, it was an okay performance and there is still room for more improvement in future.

The team touched down in Port Moresby and transited to Lae this afternoon.
