Agiru stadium for Wigmen

Construction of the Agiru Memorial Stadium in Hela is expected to begin soon following the awarding of the contract recently.

The stadium will be the home ground of the Hela Wigmen Rugby League franchise.

In a statement the club says once built, the Wigmen can finally move back to Hela to host games in the 2019 season.

Having its own stadium was one of the challenges by the team since its inception in 2013, where they have had to play their home games in Southern Highlands and recently in Port Moresby.

With the support of Kumul Petroleum Holdings in 2017, a proper scope and design for a standard rugby league field was done and presented to the Hela Provincial Government by the Wigmen Board.

The Hela Provincial Executive Council approved and allocated funding in its 2018 budget to build the Agiru Memorial Stadium in Hela.

The Hela Wigmen is the brainchild of the Late Anderson Pawa Agiru to use rugby league as a unifying factor for the new Hela Province.
