Roosters reportedly dismiss claims of Sonny Bill Williams' shock NRL return

Sonny Bill Williams has reportedly been told he's not part of the All Blacks plans for next year's Rugby World Cup.

The Blues second-five is rumoured to be returning to the NRL with the Roosters at the end of the Super Rugby season.

Former Roosters player Jimmy Smith made the comments on Australian radio.

"The mail is good," Smith told the Big Sports Weekend radio programme on Sydney radio station 2KY.

"From what I understand, the deal is done. It will be a short stint at the end of the Super Rugby season."

Smith told the Big Sports Weekend on Sunday that the backrower will be back in Bondi before the finals with the Super Rugby final set for August 4.

However, the Roosters would need to register any NRL contract before June 30 to allow Williams to play this season.

The 32-year-old's deal with New Zealand Rugby doesn't expire until the end of 2019, meaning he'd need to either be released or afforded a sabbatical in order to make the move.

Smith purported that the cap space left by the departure of Mitchell Pearce would be sufficient to sign Williams.

Roosters chairman Nick Politis has has dismissed any suggestions of a shock return.

"It's news to me," Politis told FOX Sports Australia today.

"As far as I'm aware he's contracted to play rugby union in New Zealand.

"We love Sonny and we'll always love Sonny. But I'm not sure where this has come from."

An All Blacks spokesperson has also reportedly denied any hint of an NRL comeback, telling 1NEWS that the midfielder is a critical piece of their World Cup plans.

Williams played one season with Sydney-based club back in 2013, winning a Premiership.
