Yama raises concern on gun control

The Madang Governor has called on the Government to have a proper law in place to deal with people in possession of unlicensed firearms in the country.

Governor Peter Yama said most times, crimes are committed by people with unlicensed firearms, including youth who are involved in criminal activities.

He pointed out that the root cause for many young people being in possession of firearms and committing crime is because they are not given a second chance in life, including education opportunities.

Many young people have been neglected, with no chance of employment or education opportunities; they resort to crime just to survive, stated Governor Yama.

He said this must be taken into consideration if and when the government addresses the issue of gun control, or unlicensed firearms making their way into the country.

“The issue is with the young people on the street. We need to give them a second chance through education and make them useful in the society.”

Yama said funding resources must be equally distributed to address crime around the country.

He is optimistic that if young people were given second chance in life through education, crime rates in the country will decrease.
