Uni fee increases to be scrutinised

The announcement by some universities to increase Tuition Fees has come under the scrutiny of the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology.

Minister Pila Niningi said at the moment these increments are not effective and has directed Secretary, Fr Jan Czuba, to meet with the institutions.

Secretary Fr Jan clarified that not all universities are proposing school fee increments.

But for those few that have proposed fee increases they will be instructed to justify their reasons for the increase.

Fr Jan said institutions are independently structured and decide tuition fee increments according to their needs.

“The reasons could be that investment into infrastructure and learning resources was not enough therefore needing more money” said Fr Jan.

However he added that it’s not confirmed that they will impose the new school fee structure. These increments are pending until justified.
