UNFF to provide further assistance to PNG

The United Nations Forum on Forest (UNFF) will provide further assistance to build capacity on project designs in sustainable forest management in Papua New Guinea.

UNFF sustainable development officer, Benjamin Singer, told Loop PNG that UNFF’s collaboration with the PNG Forest Authority (PNGFA) is stretched over the whole of this year.

This follows a successful week-long capacity building workshop held recently in Port Moresby on project design in sustainable forest management in PNG.

At the end of the workshop, government officers were able to identify and formulate a project proposal that can be submitted to donor partners to consider and fund.

Singer said their collaboration with PNGFA kick started with the workshop and they will provide further assistance in developing the proposal in the course of the year.

UNFF hopes to hold a validation workshop towards the end of the year.

“Once we’ve come up with a project idea and the concept note of project proposal then we’ll come back and organise a workshop so that all stakeholders can be taken into account.

“During the validation workshop, they can listen to the details of the project and can share their views,” Singer said.

UNFF is working in collaboration with PNGFA upon request of the Minister for Forest to provide support to PNGFA in mobilising financing for sustainable forest management in PNG.

The project designs focus on a small number of international donors, including the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
