Two charged for armed robberies in Morobe

TWO men have been charged for armed robbery early this month in Bulolo, Morobe Province.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said the two men were dressed in police uniforms with a fake search warrant held up the shop owned by Indians and stole over K15,000 in cash.

The two men were apprehended at West Taraka in Lae following a drinking spree two days later.

Wagambie said the Police Intelligence Unit managed to track the suspects apprehending 15 suspects with the two charged.

They had escaped in a Land Cruiser to Lae where police were tipped off and detained the two men.

The Metropolitan Superintendent said police also questioned 13 other suspects who were later released but are being monitored by Wagambie’s men..

“We relayed the information to Bulolo Police, Bulolo Police brought the victims down to Lae the same day where two of the suspects were positively identified,” Wagambie said.

The other 13 suspects have been released but all their information have been collected and they are being monitored by Police.

While in Bulolo, Police investigators in Lae have gathered enough information that the two were involved in previous robberies in Lae several days before they executed the Bulolo robbery. Lae Police will bring them back to Lae to charge them for the robberies.

“I still believe there are organised groups committing major crimes in the City,” The Metropolitan Superintendent said.

He said Police are gradually breaking them up by apprehending gang members. High powered firearms are still in the hands of criminal elements.

Wagambie added that some members of the community know of this but are not coming forward to Police, maybe because of fear of retaliation from friends and supporters of the criminals.
