Transport Review to help standardise public transport

A transport review has been effectively completed as it is expected to be presented in the upcoming Parliament sitting.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Malakai Tabar says this will see to strengthening the monitoring and licensing processes and guidelines for public transport, both PMV’s and taxis.

Tabar says they have accepted strong statements from people through the media and the department, along with the assistance from the Government and the APEC minister, for improvements will be made.

He stated that it is also the responsibility of every Papua New Guinean in their endeavour to run their business in such a small city like Port Moresby; they must learn to work with authority to clean up their act and do the right thing.

“Trying to make money out of their small business is one matter and trying to keep up the image of a country is an important responsibility.”

Tabar appeals to every Papua New Guinean especially after the legislative framework is done and put through Parliament, the department is going to full responsibility for how public transport will be managed and operated Port Moresby and other centres as well.

In support of the review, Minister for APEC, Justin Tkatchenko say this is to ensure that all taxis and PMV’s are cleaned up appropriately.

The new laws and regulations the Transport Minister will be putting through to Parliament, the government will support to get public transport owners to get their act cleaned up and show a bit more professionalism in the way they conduct themselves and their businesses.

The new laws and regulations that will be passed through parliament will address all these issues for the lead up to APEC, we can have clean and usable public transportation.
