Suspect in doctor’s assault revealed

Details into the policeman that assaulted the resident medical officer at the Port Moresby General Hospital has been released.

Internal Affairs have revealed that 26-year-old Isaac Wanui, from East Sepik Province, had allegedly stopped and accused Dr Newman Berry of dropping off rascals.

Dr Berry, who is attached to the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Services, was travelling back from Tokarara after dropping off his sister. This was around 9.30-10pm on Wednesday, May 31.

Dr Berry was stopped and brutally assaulted for no apparent reason, where he sustained severe head and facial injuries, including psychological trauma.

Internal Affairs confirm that Wanui was arrested and charged last week under the Criminal Code Act for unlawful wounding.

The investigative phase is being brought to a close now and the next phase will take place in court.
