Service, infrastructure top agenda for Morauta

Service and infrastructure will be the top agenda for the people of Moresby North-West.

Sir Mekere told the media this morning, prior to his declaration as member-elect for Moresby North-West.

His return to politics comes after a term absence. He was the MP from 1997 to 2012.

From retirement, Sir Mekere said he is making a comeback because he is worried about the country’s future.

He thanked the people of Moresby North-West for giving him the privilege of representing them.

He said he chose to return and play the game instead of watching and criticising.

"The last five years has changed in its democratic character," he said.

He now wants to work with likeminded leaders and is confident with the opposition making a change and forming government.

He called on other independents to come together, survey the political landscape and move at the right time to join a party, indicating ‘The Alliance’ group.

Sir Mekere reached the absolute majority with 14,007 votes at the 35th elimination.

The announcement was made at 9am today.

As of 11am, a declaration is yet to be made by the Returning Officer.
