Senior PNG judge sworn in as Nauru judge

Senior PNG judge, Nicholas Robert Pakek Kirriwom, was officially sworn in as a judge of the Nauru Appeals Court on November 9th.

This was the result of a Memorandum of Understanding between the PNG Judiciary and the Judiciary of the Republic of Nauru in August of this year.

The Chief Justice of Nauru, Filimone Jitoko, expressed appreciation to Justice Kirriwom for accepting the appointment put forward by former Chief Justice of PNG Sir Salamo Injia.

The ceremony, held at the Nauru Government House in the presence of the President of Nauru, Baron Waqa, is an outcome of the close relations between the two judiciaries.

Under the MOU, areas of judicial cooperation include the provision and exchange of technical advice, information and support; workshops, conferences, seminars and symposiums; study visits, work attachments and secondments and exchange of legal materials and other legal resources.

Activities also to be undertaken include assistance provided by the PNG Judiciary to the Nauru Judiciary in judicial services, electronic case management, leadership and change management, budgeting and finance and alternative dispute resolution.

Justice Kirriwom said he is looking forward to the opportunity to serve the people of Nauru in accordance with the country’s Constitution and Rule of Law.

Justice Kirriwom is a serving member of the PNG judiciary and the third most senior judge serving in the Bench of the PNG National and Supreme Courts.
