Secretary to respond to mismanagement allegations

Department of Agriculture and Livestock Secretary, Dr Vele Pat Ila’ava, has been given until February 1 to respond to allegations of mismanagement.

He has been served a letter by Minister Benny Allan to respond and remain in office as secretary.

The secretary has welcomed the letter, saying it is in the best interest of the sector that he does so.

Minister Allan said Dr Ila’ava is a career public servant and must be given the opportunity to respond.

His response will be forwarded to Public Service Minister Elias Kapavore, who will look at the seriousness of the allegations and decide if an investigation should be carried out.

“There are set processes that need to be followed… That does not mean he is suspended, he remains till such a time when there needs to be an investigation and the minister (Public service) will advise me,” said Allan.

He said only the appointing authority can carry out suspensions.

A list of the allegations have also been circulated to Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and the Chief Secretary.

The allegations of mismanagement within the department arose last month after a former employee wrote to Minister Allan, recommending for the suspension of the secretary, among other issues.
