Schools yet to get new curriculum materials

Elementary schools throughout the country are yet to receive learning materials under the new Standards-Based Curriculum (SBC).

The delivery of the SBC elementary syllabuses, teacher guides and English kits to all elementary schools throughout the country was launched on January 22.

However, to date, close to 7000 elementary schools are yet to receive their learning materials.

Each SBC kit contains teacher’s guides for elementary prep, E1 and E2 with daily lesson plans, a set of flash cards, posters, 4GB SD Card and its plastic adapter and CD.

Secretary for Education, Dr Uke Kombra, confirmed that only schools in the National Capital District have received theirs with distribution underway in Central and Gulf.

Dr Kombra said the delay in distribution was due to issues with the contractor responsible for distribution and the insurance company.

He explained that as per the contract, the contractor wanted to have the books insured but the insurance company refused due to some issues that needed to be addressed.

“I gave the approval that we go ahead to deliver and set aside those insurance complication because the schools have started and the students are expecting the books,” Dr Kombra said.

He gave the instruction for the books to be delivered last week to Gulf and Central but is yet to receive an update on that.

The materials will be distributed throughout the country according to a schedule and all schools are expected to receive the materials by the end of March.

Dr Kombra said despite the delay, all schools are required to implement the new curriculum by using the training documents given to the teachers last year.
