Police need working vehicles!

Most times, police are unable to attend to complaints or criminal incidents due to the lack of vehicles.

This ongoing issue is one major setback faced in the Police hierarchy, says NCD metropolitan superintendent, Commander Ben Turi.

Turi said many of the vehicles have been used for years without servicing, while some police stations experience a shortage of vehicles.

“A police vehicle is one of the most important aspects in policing; it is an obvious asset that will enable police personnel to move around freely,” says the commander.

At times, complaints go unattended or criminals easily escape because of the absence or the condition of vehicles.

Turi added that other important mechanisms are the records of data and the upgrading of systems or technology in each station.

At the moment, most of the stations do not even have computers to store information, let alone data or records of criminals or complaints.

For instance, when a complainant lays a complaint at the Hohola police station, the officer on counter duty will get the information while the complainant will have to wait for the police personnel to bring the information back to Boroko Police Station – an exercise that can take hours to complete.

Turi says there is a need for improvement as this has caused complications in the past and will continue to if nothing is done.
