PNG talks focus on illicit tobacco, maritime security

Illicit tobacco, APEC 2018 and maritime and border security were key topics at the 5th Customs Forum.

The event was hosted by PNG Customs Service Acting Commissioner, Border Security and Regional Operations, Benjamin Sine, and Australian Department of Home Affairs Regional Director Pacific, James Watson.

The meeting was held on Tuesday 5 June in Port Moresby, and provided an opportunity to continue developing the already strong people-to-people links between the agencies.

The parties also discussed joint patrols and ongoing capacity building programs such as vessel searches; of which a practical training component was delivered by Australian Border Force officers on a vessel moored in Port Moresby.

It was also an opportunity to celebrate the upcoming gifting of three Port Class vessels to PNG Customs Service and a pallet x-ray scanner, which will contribute to the Customs Service’s border security capabilities.

The Customs Forum was well attended by both agencies and has set a strong foundation to support the upcoming annual head of agency meeting to be held later this year.
