PM O'Neill expresses sadness of late Hau'ofa’s passing

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has expressed sadness and extended condolences to the family of Roger Hau'ofa following the passing of the renowned radio presenter last night.

"Mr Hau’ofa was a giant of media in our nation, and a true gentleman in his nature,” O’Neill said.

“Roger was tough in his interview style, fair in his questions and he always had the latest information on the topics that he was discussing.

“For nearly fifty years, we have heard Roger’s distinctive voice as he has interviewed Prime Ministers and Ministers, community leaders and the grassroots people of our nation.

“His presence will be terribly missed by radio listeners around the country.

“Roger made a very important contribution to debate and governance in our nation and this will never be forgotten.

“There must be thousands and thousands of hours of interviews that Roger has recorded, that I hope this will be persevered as an important part of our national heritage.

“One of the best ways to honour Roger Hau’ofa will be to make sure that his interviews are archived and can be heard by our people for hundreds of years into the future."

O’Neill said that nowhere will this loss be felt more than by Roger Hau’ofa’s family.

“We pray and offer our deepest condolences to Roger Hau'ofa’s family in this time of sadness,” the Prime Minister said.

“The thoughts and prayers of people right around the country are with you at this difficult time.”

He said Roger Hau’ofa’s courage was evident right to the end.

“Roger’s insistence that he return to his village of Iare, in Central, to see out his last days is testament to his bravery and fortitude.

“We will miss Roger Hau’ofa from our radio airways, and we will miss him as a truly great Papua New Guinean."
