PM O’Neill visits Fiji

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill is currently in Fiji for an official two-day visit to the neighbouring Melanesian country.

PM O’Neill held various bilateral talks with his counterpart and Fiji’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama and other important meetings.

Mr O'Neill is the first PNG Prime Minister to be invited to speak at the Fiji Parliament - the only other foreign leader ever invited was Prime Minister of India.

Arriving on Sunday in Suva, Fiji, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill met with Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Frank Bainimarama and other dignitaries.

The two-day visit include bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Bainimarama, an address to Fiji’s Parliament, a courtesy call to Fiji’s President and a meeting with the Fiji-PNG Business Council.

When addressing the Fiji Parliament on Monday, PM O’Neill stressed the importance of strengthening trade and investment between the two countries.

He also reiterated his call of free trade agreement between the two countries during a farewell dinner hosted by Mr Banimarama.

He added that PNG will always support Fiji’s leadership through the Talanoa dialogue – that is being facilitated through the Climate Action Pacific Partnership.

He said climate change is real – and it is hurting our people.

PM O’Neill departs Fiji today.
