Organisations recognised by EU

Five organisations were awarded at the European Ambassador’s Human Rights Appreciation Awards ceremony on Tuesday evening.

The awards recognise these organisations for promoting and advocating for human rights in Papua New Guinea.

The five civil society organisations recognised were Child Fund Papua New Guinea, World Vision Papua New Guinea, Transparency International Papua New Guinea, City Mission PNG Limited and PNG Tribal Foundation.

When presenting the awards, the European Union Ambassador to PNG, Jernej Videtic, said: “We believe that these five organisations, each one of them in some ways has significantly contributed to ensuring peaceful and stable societies for all in the country.”

The ambassador outlined the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, which is a movement that encourages action to end violence against women and girls.

“Under the Spotlight Initiative for PNG, an initiative funded by the EU with 19 million Euros and implemented in close collaboration with the UN, this is a part of the worldwide campaign that aims to eradicate gender-based violence and should be implemented for the next three years.”

Ambassador Videtic said such organisations and individuals must be able to work in a safe and enabling environment free from obstruction and insecurity.
