North Fly MP unhappy with disaster response

The North Fly MP is unhappy with the Government’s lack of immediate assistance to villages in Western Province that were affected by the recent 7.5 magnitude earthquake.

James Donald says most of the areas affected were remote and could only be reached by air.

Most affected villages in North Fly, according to reports, are those along the border of Hela and Southern Highlands provinces, and are from Nomad and Olsobip LLGs.

Donald said he required logistical support from relevant government agencies, especially with helicopter hire, for at least 6 days to visit those villages affected and assess their situation so that necessary steps could be taken to assist them.

He said the negligence on the part of the Government was unacceptable.

Donald said his request for immediate logistical support, especially a helicopter from local service providers, was not immediate but he was hoping to visit the villages mid or at the end of the week.

“In fact I am under extreme pressure to get over to the site of impact communities with casualties after the 7.5 magnitude earthquake,” stated the local MP.
