NICTA, Digicel sign K2m contract

Six teachers’ colleges will benefit from the Connecting the Schools project following a K2 million contract signing today in Port Moresby.

The project was initiated by the National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) in partnership with the Education Department.

The contract was signed between NICTA and internet service provider Digicel PNG.

Dauli Teachers College (Hela), Nazarene, St Peter’s Channel Catholic College, Madang, Gaulim and Enga Teachers colleges will access internet connectivity and broadband Wi-Fi services under NICTA’s universal access service program.

Internet contains an endless supply of knowledge and information and the Connecting the Schools project aims to provide this for the aspiring teachers.

“This project has been undertaken and implemented in partnership with the Department of Education,” explained NICTA CEO Charles Punaha.

The K2 million is for up to 24 months and will see Digicel PNG roll out internet connection in phases starting in July with St Peter’s Channel Teachers College.

“Digicel will ensure that this contract is implemented accordingly to fulfil the objectives of the project,” assured Ketan Mehta, Chief Financial Officer of Digicel PNG.

The Connecting the Schools project aligns with the Government’s policy objective on accessibility and affordability of ICT services in the country.
