New law and order policing effective in Lae

The new approach in policing law and order in Papua New Guinea’s second largest city is gaining applause from the public.

The Lae Police command under the helm of Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr is responding faster to crimes committed in the Morobe provincial capital.

That was evident in apprehending three suspects involved in the BNBM Hardware robbery on Monday, after police blocked off their escape routes when alarm was raised of the crime.

Wagambie Jnr said “police in Lae have adopted the Sector Patrol Concept of policing which is supported by our Sector Response Unit (SRU) and Mobile Sqaud 13.

“The new SRU, since launched had been performing well. There has been good response and attendance to incidences both day and night.

“While monitoring their work at night, I have noticed that the unit has policed their areas of responsibility (sector zones) and they have been able to make a lot of arrests in regards to persons carrying homemade guns, illicit spirits and so forth.

“It's all about quick response and proactive policing. We will still be improving as it is a new unit and is a work in progress.”

Below are some of the comments by our readers when we run the story of BNBM Hardware robbery.
