New development cooperation policy to be launched

The National Government will launch the new Papua New Guinea Development Cooperation Policy 2018-2022 in the coming weeks.

The country’s first development cooperation policy was formulated in 2015, and has been revised earlier this year to reflect the development priorities articulated in the recently launched Medium Term Development Plan III.

The key outcomes of the review of the 2015 Development Cooperation Policy, amongst others, include:

  • Alignment of development cooperation with government’s development priorities
  • Coordination within government and development partners
  • Sector coordination mechanisms

The goal of the 2018-2022 Policy is to ensure that development cooperation resources make maximum contribution to the achievement of PNG’s MTDP III and support national sectoral and subnational policies and plans.

The development cooperation policy ensures;

  • 50 percent of total development assistance to PNG is steered towards economic infrastructure
  • Greater development partner presence at subnational levels
  • Encourage incentives in cooperation with development partners in kina-for-kina arrangements
  • Increase budget support arrangements
