Two mobile squad units have secured the Gordon police barracks as contractors continue with the chopping down of raintrees.
Commander of NCD Barracks, John Daviaga, told Loop PNG that tenants have been intimidating the workmen, hence the security measure.
“After this, we’ll have the water and power disconnected,” Daviaga said.
“Everyone should vacate this place by this afternoon.
“Whoever defies the Police Commissioner’s directive will be dealt with severely.”
The first phase of the demolition started on Tuesday afternoon after tenants at the single quarters were advised that two of the three single quarters’ blocks will be demolished.
Only 15 of the families residing there are genuine.
NCD Central police commander, Donald Yamosombi, says these remaining personnel will be catered for on a temporary basis at the single quarters that will be spared when the rest of the condemned buildings are removed.
Police Commissioner Gari Baki issued the demolition directive following an inspection by the NCDC Health Authority in 2015, condemning the barracks as unfit for human habitation.
