Massive effort to rebuild infrastructures

It will take a massive effort to rebuild the lives of those people affected in the quake disaster in the Highlands region.

Emergency Disaster Co-ordination Controller, Dr William Hamblin said it will take about three months or more for the people to be able to get on their feet again and live their lives.

In an interview with this newsroom today, Dr Hamblin said about K42m has been spent on road maintenance alone to try and connect the affected areas to basic services again.

He said out of the K150m given by the Government, they have used up 2/3 of the funds and K50m remaining to carry on with the relief supplies.

“It will take about three months or so to repatriate these people back to their areas and it is a massive task.”

He further added that a massive job is yet to be completed in terms of infrastructure development.

He added that they have been stretched to the limit as to coordinate the relief supply.

“We have been stretched to the limit in terms of coordination and we need support from each and every individual rather than throwing stones at us on social media.”

Meantime, he said relief supply for the people of Telefomin should be arriving in the district today.
